The Institute of Coding Summer School at the University of Exeter
An introduction to the fundamentals of computer programming and social data analytics.
We are offering current university students the opportunity to enhance your digital skills at a summer school designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of computer programming and data analytics. We are particularly keen in attracting those students who may not yet have had the opportunity to learn these skills (e.g. Humanities and Social Sciences).
The IoC Summer School at Exeter, hosted by Computer Science and the Exeter Q-Step Centre, offers undergraduate and postgraduate social science and humanities students an opportunity to learn and practice their digital skills, through a combination of lectures and programming laboratories.
A desire to challenge yourself and learn to code is the only requirement. A background in maths or statistics is not expected of participants.
The IoC Summer School is comprised of three 2-week learning blocks. Students can opt to take blocks 1 or 2 separately, or select one of the following combinations: 1 & 2, 1 & 3, or the full combination 1, 2, and 3.
Block 1 Coding Boot Camp
2 - 13 July 2018
A 2-week intensive boot camp to boost your computational skills and learn how to formulate and solve problems by using algorithmic thinking and collaborative programming.
Block 2 Social Data Analytics
16 - 27 July 2018
2 weeks to explore statistical concepts, data visualisation, and learn about social research methods including analysis of textual data and network analysis.
Block 3 Artificial Intelligence
23 July - 10 August 2018
2 weeks to discover more about programming, machine learning and AI with Python. Students attending block 3 either need to have attended block 1 or have some existing programming skills.
All activities take place at the Exeter Q-Step Centre (University of Exeter, Streatham Campus). Bursary packages are available for 15 students per each teaching block covering the costs of tuition and accommodation. A non-refundable £50 booking fee is applicable for successful candidates.
The deadline for application is Sunday 3 June 2018.
Successful candidates will be notified on Friday 15 June 2018
